NAME: Krolia
CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender
CANON POINT: Post Season 7
AGE: Mid-Forties, ish. Galra age differently then humans.
BACKGROUND: Krolia has worked as part of the Blade of Marmora her whole life, training and protecting the galaxy at large through subterfuge and sabotage. Her current mission was to work among the ranks of the Galra empire, trying to gather information in their fight to stop Emperor Zarkon from gaining the Voltron Lions. After the Red Lion is found by Sendak, Zarkon's engineers are able to track their signal at close range. He orders thousands of scouts to search across the universe to locate the remaining lions. Krolia is sent to Earth with fellow scouts to trace a signal coming from the planet's surface. Knowing she can't allow Zarkon to get his hands on the Lion, she engages in a dogfight, destroys the ship of her "comrade" and ends up crash landing on Earth.
During her time on Earth she stayed with the man who saved her from the downed fighter. Soon after, they became lovers, both working to protect the Blue Lion of Voltron, and eventually starting a family. Unfortunately, the Galra managed to track the signal down once more and she was forced to leave her new family behind to protect them. It was not the most ideal choice, and she reflects on this as one of the most difficult choices of her life, but it was needed to protect not only her budding family but those of Earth and ultimately the universe at large. She leaves her blade, the symbol of her part in the Blades of Marmora, with her lover--a piece of her to be given to their son when he was old enough to know the truth or at least some of it.
Once again in contact with the Blade of Marmora following her departure from Earth, Krolia was again assigned to infiltrate the ranks of the Galra Empire while also using her cunning and wits to keep the empire's attention away from Earth and the Blue Lion. Eventually, the Blade found the need to call her back from her assignment as Zarkon's rule fell and Lotor began his push to assume control. As luck, fate, some cosmic force, or some other form of destiny and irony might have it, the Blade member chosen to retrieve her from the field was her very own son, Keith.
Krolia was currently stationed at Warlord Ranveig's science base, which was currently being used to research the enriched quintessence that passed through his territory. The quintessence was like none other the Galra had encountered before, and Ranveig immediately began testing. After Ranveig's departure, she stayed on the base, which is where Keith was asked to retrieve her from. Their reunion was tense, especially with the attack on the base from Commander Ludnok and Commander Trugg who were trying to take control from the now fractured empire. It's this confrontation where she bargains their freedom from Trugg if she gives them the access codes to the superweapon.
Keith mistakes this as her throwing away her mission as he pilots them to safety, but in fact, it was the opposite. Trugg learned very quickly that the superweapon was a vicious monster that tore her and her crew apart. Krolia then has to explain to Keith in a short amount of time that her mission wasn't over, and despite the bombshell she just dropped about being his mother they had somewhere to be. She had scanned the ship's flight path that passed through Ranveig's territory only to discover it had been through the Quantum Abyss and now? They needed to find the way through in order to get their hands on the quintessence.
Traveling through the Quantum Abyss was treacherous, often causing the two of them to relive parts of their lives (or of each other's lives) due to the distortion of time and space caused by the closeness of dark matter within this space. Thankfully, despite the awkward and emotionally trying moments these flashes of memory gave, the time spent in the abyss allowed Keith some closure and gave Krolia the chance to spend time with and know the son she never got to raise. They were each other's point of sanity through the two-year journey through time and space--a journey that ultimately brought them to a planet hidden within the abyss, one that harbored Altean refugees.
It is on this planet that they encounter Romelle, one of the surviving Alteans. She offers them insight into the truth of Lotor's actions and secrecy: experimentation on Alteans for the means of drawing out their Quintessence, an experiment that ultimately led to the death of any and all subjects of study. It is with this news, and Romelle in tow, that Krolia and Keith return to Voltron in order to expose the prince for what he is.
It's the truth of Lotor's actions that set into motion the events that would bring our heroes to where they are now, Krolia included. Following their revelation, Lotor ends up confronting Voltron and its Paladins in his Sincline ships. He tries to reason with Allura, arguing that his actions with the Altean colony were for the greater good. However, after the princess compares him to his father, Lotor goes off the deep end and truly begins fighting Voltron in earnest. During this fight Lotor continually accesses the Quintessence field, weakening the fabric of reality--every reality. To correct this, the paladins have to sacrifice what has become their home, using the reactive core of the Castle of Lions to generate what is essentially a second Big Bang to reset reality. This explosion causes some weird time things to occur and when the crew finally encounters someone that knew them, they find that the universe has believed them to be dead for nearly three years.
This news and the loss of the Castle of Lions is what ultimately has the paladins setting a course for Earth. During this time and the road trip from space hell, Krolia recognizes a signal that the Lions pick up--one that is an old beacon of the Blades of Marmora. Naturally, the team investigates because a long out of use signal obviously couldn't be a trap and instead must be Kolivan. Yeah, it turns out to be a trap meant to lure in the Blades in order to kill them. Due to Keith, and some very interesting and useful (read teleportation) powers of Kosmo the space wolf, the team manages to not only kill the man luring Blades but they also manage to rescue Kolivan. It is at this point that Krolia makes the difficult decision to leave Voltron, and her son, to remain with Kolivan. With the signal still active, they aim to see what other Blades may come, and what was left of the order to rebuild. She separates with the promise to see them all on Earth when they are done.
That reunion eventually comes after a massive conflict on Earth, one that nearly sees the destruction of the planet and Voltron at the hands of Sendak. When she does see Keith again, it's when he is in the hospital recovering from the fight and Earth is left to rebuild. The fight is still not over, but for the moment there is a need to breathe and measure what the next steps will be.
PERSONALITY: Krolia is, at her core, a character of great conflict. Prior to her arrival on Earth little existed but her mission—to the point where she put her own life at risk on the approach to Earth to stop the discovery of a Voltron Lion. Since that crash landing though, she had to rethink her own priorities. Life was no longer just the mission. It was her son, her lover, their home—there was so much more at stake, and more to protect. It is her loyalty and principles that ultimately cause her to leave Earth and her new life and family behind. Loyalty and care for her family, and the principle to do what is best for the greater good, no matter the personal sacrifices required.
That isn’t to say that she doesn’t feel regret for leaving her loved ones behind; it may well be one of her deepest regrets. However, her being present at that time put everyone at risk—and she could do more to keep the Galra fleets from Earth by returning to the Blade. Her love for her family is a deep one, as evidenced by her later interactions with Keith. She risks exposure to protect him when they first meet again, and she shields him bodily when they have their first encounter with the Quantum Abyss’ memory radiation. In fact, she later admits to Keith that the reason she left Earth wasn’t for the mission, but to protect the one thing she loved most: Him, her son.
Outside of her personal loyalties and principles, Krolia’s biggest strength is her cunning and her ability to think clearly and rationally under pressure. When leaving her former post with Keith, she agrees to allow Commander Trug access to the superweapon despite her son’s protests and the key objective of her mission. She knew what the weapon was, what it would do to the Galran commander and her forces in its murderous rage—and so she agrees because there was no actual risk present for her, Keith, or the mission to do so. Her risks are more calculated than those Keith makes, but it’s obvious that the apple does not fall far from the tree in that department. She is also able to see what the only path forward is when she and Keith lose their ship in the Quantum Abyss, initially suggesting they continue to move forward from debris to debris, before working with her son to hitch a ride on what was essentially a space whale.
POWERS/ABILITIES: The Blades of Marmora are, first and foremost, an organization of spies—of which Krolia is one. Because of this role, it can be assumed that Krolia has several skills needed to be successful in subterfuge. One of these would be the ability to act. Galra seem fairly blunt and straightforward, likely able to read subtle notes of misdirection in minute body language, however, Krolia is able to lie for years to maintain her cover within Galra command. Krolia is a skilled speaker and is often able to manipulate others into positions she needs or wants them to be in. This is, once again, most notably with the confrontation with Commander Trug. While Trug was convinced she had gotten what she wanted from Krolia and that she would be able to take her and Keith out after the fact, she was instead setting herself up for her own destruction. Krolia knew this, even planned for it to aid her and Keith’s getaway.
Another skill is purely physical and based in melee combat. Her primary weapon is a luxite blade, which requires close-quarters hand-to-hand combat. She is able to handle and defeat several highly trained soldiers and programmed drones on her own in a fight before losing her blade and being forced into a situation of surrender.
Finally, another skill that has served her well is those as a pilot. This is initially seen with her approach to Earth. She makes the decision that this is the time to reveal herself as a traitor and spy, turning on her Galra partner by engaging his ship in an out-and-out dogfight to keep him from the discovery of the Blue Lion. While her ship is ultimately downed in the fight, she not only managed to take out the other fighter but also brought her ship to a relatively safe landing. Even while it was technically a crash landing, her ship was mostly intact and she was relatively uninjured (outside of what was likely a concussion).
